William Singer’s (M.F.A., painting, 2013) paintings address the present by engaging critically with cultural forms of the past. His brightly colored impasto works reference historical subjects, pulled from a variety of sources and examined through a lens of abstraction. He uses an array of paint applications, from washes to scrapes, to depart from the traditional and highlight the physicality of the medium. Singer has held residencies at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts in New York City and the Red Bull House of Art in Detroit, Michigan. His work has been included in group exhibitions all over the U.S., including Michigan, Georgia, Ohio, Colorado, and New York. His most recent solo show, “From the Depths Above,” was presented at SCAD's 2017 deFINE Art at the SCAD Museum of Art in Savannah, Georgia. Singer currently lives and works in Detroit.
