Panama native, Maria Raquel Cochez (B.F.A., fibers, 2002) is an artist known for her extensive work about body image and acceptance and relationships with food. She works in a variety of media including video, photography, painting, and art objects. Cochez's work is included in prominent art collections such as Savannah College of Art and Design, Ortiz- Gurdian Contemporary Art Center in Nicaragua, Casa Santa Ana Foundation in Panama, and Christian Lesko Collection, in Costa Rica. She has won several awards among them, Artist in Residence, Kultur Kontakt, Vienna, Austria (2016), Finalist: Barbara Deming Grant, Wilton, New Hampshire (2014) Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant, NYC (2012) and the SCAD Honors Awards (2010). In 2010, 2013, and 2016 she represented Panama in the Central American Art Biennial. Cochez has been a guest lecturer in several countries in Central America, and her work has a strong presence in the region as well as internationally.
