AMIS (M.F.A. painting) is a New York-based artist originally from China who has lived and worked in the U.S. for more than nine years. AMIS works mostly with oils, and his works have exhibited internationally, including at venues in China, New York, Wisconsin and Georgia. AMIS’ work is strongly related to repetition and seriality, which can be understood in terms of his penchant for visual effect of patterns and textures, which play out on a singular subject motif involving footwear. AMIS’ work is not just the simple reproduction of a subject; through the manipulation of paint, he investigates volume, shape and space while abstracting the images from his source photographs, engaging with historic traditions of abstraction and representation. His sculptural application process intensifies the lines, contours, colors, shapes and textures, transforming the image into an investigation of paint. This unified body of work is imbued with deeper implications by using the shoe as a metaphor for the individual. The shoe represents the individuality of the wearer, and references issues of choice, desire, consumption, and pleasure.
